The Wines of Nantes

Nantes wines hold a prominent place among Loire Valley wines. Alongside the famous Muscadet, the Nantes region boasts two other high-quality regional appellations and a vast array of local wines. You will be spoilt for choice: while white wines are the stars—the Nantes vineyard is the world’s largest single-variety white wine region—you will also discover rosés, reds, sweet wines, and several sparkling wines that are well worth the detour.

The three main appellations of Nantes wines

Wines influenced by the nearby ocean.

Nantes wines occupy the westernmost part of the Loire Valley, close to the ocean estuary, bordering Brittany to the north and Vendée to the south. The Nantes vineyard thus benefits from an oceanic climate, temperate and often sunnier than the rest of the Loire vineyard.

Did you know?

Nantes, one of the rare cities not to have given its name to its wine.

Unlike most French vineyards, such as the Bordeaux region, Nantes wines are among the few that did not inherit the name of the neighboring city or the region (Bourgogne, Beaujolais...).

A unique geological terroir

The Nantes terroir is primarily composed of igneous rocks (granite, gabbro) and metamorphic rocks (gneiss, schist). This unique geological foundation is perfectly suited for white grape varieties, which cover 85% of the area, providing them with their distinctive mineral character.
